Citizens Demand Congress End Libyan Military Action

The American People resolve that they demand Congress immediately rise up and stop all U.S. participation in Libyan hostilities. No de-funding legislation can get through since both houses of Congress have to pass that and it subject to a presidential veto. However under section 1544 (c) a simple joint resolution can stop hostilities immediately. We also demand that Congress take action to revise the War Powers Resolution to make it more clear and restrictive on a president. Together we must rise against continued United States engagement in Libya in violation of the War Powers Resolution.

Several Republican Central Committees (As of now: Douglas, Churchill, Nye, and Clark County Republican Parties in Nevada) have already passed resolutions requesting Congress to take action.

History has shown that citizens can effectively put pressure on Congress to get them to do the right thing. This was proven in 2005-6 when citizens rose up and contacted Congress and the White House to protest a pending immigration bill; the bill was pulled days later.

The Constitution grants Congress, and Congress alone, the authority to declare war. The War Powers Resolution specifies that Congress must approve before military forces are put into hostilities. This ensures, as The Founding Fathers intended, the collective wisdom of the president and Congress are involved in making this decision.

Since March 19, 2011 US military forces have engaged in hostile activities in Libya without Congressional approval, establishing a dangerous precedent. There's been much debate about the constitutionality of the resolution. However, consider that without this resolution the Constitution is even more restrictive regarding military usage.

It is time that Americans begin a simple campaign to reach out to Congress and the White House and to tell them that we know what the law says. The time is here to rise up against lawyers and politicians manipulating the intent of the Founding Fathers by basing fraudulent decisions upon flawed precedents.

  1. Pardon my lack of knowledge, but the article refers to a 1544(c). My question is: 1544(c) in which document?
